Re: peut-être
Bearing in mind that my judgment may be influenced by speaking English as my first language, it sounds more like "pờ-tai-khơ". – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 05:58, ngày 24 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: tête
"Tây-thơ", almost "đây-thơ". You know, chữ quốc ngữ is a very imprecise way to write French words. :^)
In my dialect of Vietnamese, the é in tét sounds like "eah" in the English "yeah?", while the áy in táy sounds like "i" in the English "light?" – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 08:58, ngày 25 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: râteau
I hear either "há-tô" or "khá-tô". (I can't tell because either the sound quality or my speakers aren't quite good enough.) In my family's dialect (a mix of northern and southern), /x/ is the formal way to pronounce kh, but we pronounce it as /kʰ/ in normal speech; r is either /ɾ/ or /r/, but I personally can't roll my Rs. Also, regardless of dialect, "ô" at the end of a word is longer than the eau in the recording. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 10:57, ngày 25 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: tard
I hear, "Tao!" In that recording, the words starts at a high tone but stops at a low tone (˥˥˩). In most Vietnamese dialects, that's the ngang tone with emphasis. The sắc tone ("táo") starts in the middle and goes up (˧˦˥). – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 07:44, ngày 27 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: ong
That article says /ɐw/, not /aw/. At least in the northern dialect, it should be /ɐw/; /ɔw/ and /aw/ are both allophones. /a/ would appear in a word like là, but the o in ong or the a in mau is closer to the o in bó. You're probably right about /aw/ in the South, though. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 07:44, ngày 27 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: /t/ before /s/
No, it would be /sɔt˧˥.saː˧˧/, technically [sɔt̚˧˥.saː˧˧] or [sɔtⁿ̥˧˥.saː˧˧]. In Vietnamese, the final consonant of a word is always unreleased or nasally released, which is why foreigners may have difficulty hearing the "t". (If I recall correctly, a few dialects do drop final consonants sometimes.) – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 21:29, ngày 27 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: tempête
Could be "Tang-pệt", "Tam-pệt", or "Ta-pệt". Unfortunately, my computer's old speakers make it very difficult to discern how the "m" is being pronounced. But there definitely is a "t", and the first syllable is not even close to a sắc tone. Remember: stress ≠ tone.
This is tang:
This is still tang:
This is táng:

Re: ếch
I say either [ek˧˥] or [əjk˧˥]. For me, [əːt˧˥] is ớt. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 19:02, ngày 28 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: chaque
Neither. A Vietnamese speaker might interpret it as "sác", sắc", or "sách", but chaque cannot be written accurately in the Vietnamese alphabet. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 21:11, ngày 28 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: trà and chả
No, trà has a huyền ( ` ) tone, and chả has a hỏi ( ? ) tone! Both start with /ʨ/ obsolete or nonstandard characters (ʨ), invalid IPA characters (ʨ), replace ʨ with t͡ɕ, however. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 21:35, ngày 28 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
This is huyền – low all the way:
This is hỏi – starting even lower but gradually rising to the middle:
– Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 22:03, ngày 28 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Actually, Dụng pronounces those two tones almost exactly like I do. (Only his ngã tone is different than mine.) Think of ả as almost like àá. Also, remember that tones are relative, unlike pitch: a little child's ngang, sắc, huyền, hỏi, ngã, and nặng all have higher pitches than an adult's. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 22:19, ngày 28 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: Jack
Yes. However, if they know English well, they might just pronounce Jack correctly the English way. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 22:28, ngày 28 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Yes, some people say "chác" if they know English. But to most Vietnamese speakers, "j" = "gi" (either /ʒ/ or /j/). Maybe that's French influence?
Also, for Catholics, there's another reason: French missionaries developed not only the Vietnamese alphabet but also a system for transliterating Biblical names from Latin or Italian. For example, Jesus (Latin: Jesu) is Giêsu, Joseph (Italian: Giuseppe) is Giuse, and John (Latin: Joannes) is Gioan. So the link between "j" and "gi" is pretty strong, even for northerners who pronounce "gi" as /z/. That's right, Jesus is /zesu/ in the northern dialect.

Re: un kilomètre
"Ơn khi-lơ-mày-thơ". Or "un key-luh-might", if you want to use the English alphabet. :^)

Re: thiết
No, Tân's pronunciation is [tʰiək˧˥]. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 01:40, ngày 29 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: cúm
/kʊm/ or /kɨm/. Yet the same person pronounces "bún" as /bun/ and "phụ thuộc" as /fu tʰuk/. They must be speaking a southern dialect that we don't include in our pronunciation tables. (There are many southern dialects. Maybe Chinese-Vietnamese speak a slightly different dialect?) Then again, seeing as they misspelled "lụt lội" as "lut lội" [1], maybe they really meant to type "cấm"? – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 09:23, ngày 1 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)
It sounds like /ɹɨəw ɹɨm/ to me. Anyhow, they're located in the North Central region, which is home to a wide variety of dialects. Our tables only describe a few of them at the moment. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 11:52, ngày 2 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: 送
"Xông". – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 11:55, ngày 2 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: quẹo
No, that's an error in Mô đun:ViePron. I've already fixed the problem in Mô đun:ViePron/sandbox but haven't copied the changes over to Mô đun:ViePron yet. If you look at Mô đun:ViePron/sandbox/testcases, which uses Mô đun:ViePron/sandbox and Mô đun:ViePron/dialects/sandbox, you can see that "quẹo" is correct there. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 11:41, ngày 2 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)
I know that. It's fixed in the sandbox, but I have to copy it to the main version once we test the sandbox version well enough. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 12:27, ngày 2 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: hiver
Either one, honestly. If I heard it from someone standing right in front of me, I'm sure I'd be able to tell, but not from a recording. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 06:37, ngày 3 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)

Yes. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 01:11, ngày 6 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: caisse
Anh nghe thấy "caisse". Từ này khó đọc theo kiểu tiếng Việt; cách đọc gần nhất có lẽ là "kétx". – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 11:10, ngày 8 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: Samsung
Anh nghe thấy gần như "Xem-xấng" hay "Xem-xoóng". Almost. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 08:58, ngày 9 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: kung fu
Sounds like "công phú" or "câng phú". In Vietnamese, 功夫 is literally "kung fu" (from English) or "công phu" (from Chinese), although martial arts is "võ thuật".

Vietnamese speakers would ignore the "th", so it'd be either "phnai" or "phnay". (Ask two people, and you will get two different answers.) Since both are still awkward for Vietnamese speakers to pronounce, they'd say something like "phơ-nai"/"phơ-nay", or simply "nai"/"nay". (This happens all the time in Vietnamese: for example, Michael Phelps is often called "Mai-cồ Pheo".) – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 08:52, ngày 9 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: cuốc và quốc
Có: /kwək˧˥/. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 08:57, ngày 9 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: centimeter
Correct. I started learning Vietnamese during my teenage years. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 23:08, ngày 15 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)
Both English and Vietnamese. I understood Vietnamese as a small child but couldn't speak it. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 18:31, ngày 16 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)
Re: phắc
No, phấc is like "fuck?" but phắc isn't like any English word. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 21:24, ngày 16 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)
No, mất, mớt, mật, or mợt, but not mắt.
hiver
I'm curently in Mexico for a month. I don't have access to computer or laptop. I can only be on my ipad for a month. My ipad could not play the file you sent me. Sorry. I'm sure Mxn can help out.Trongphu (thảo luận) 22:17, ngày 16 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)
Roughly: "I-vai-e" or "I-va-e". – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 05:54, ngày 17 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)
Yes for almost all Vietnamese but some experts at linguism may say otherwise. There are supposedly distinctions for every words since no word should pronounce exactly the same way. But I could not tell the distinction as most people. Only the experts know. It doesn't matter at all to know these minor differences between some words.Trongphu (thảo luận) 23:01, ngày 18 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)
